Attack of The Ants: Natural Ant Repellent

December 1, 2007

Happy AntEssential oils are truly amazing and they certainly came in handy this past week. One of the not so lovely experiences while we were on holiday last week was ants! They set up camp in one of the rooms in our condo and did not want to leave.

Of course it happened to be the bedroom where I was sleeping. They were in my walk in closet. Thankfully I had brought along the essential oil black pepper. I placed ten drops of essential oil into my 16 ounce spray bottle.  I added water.  I shook well and sprayed. The ants vacated.

Black pepper can be an effective, poison free way to get rid of ants. If you don’t have the essential oil you can sprinkle the ground pepper where you don’t want the ants. I usually add freshly ground pepper at my door. I haven’t had any problems with ants walking in like I used to have.

My parents took my advice I followed this simple step and their ant population within their home has been reduced. It’s an effective way to treat your home of insects. It’s not harmful and it’s wonderful for the environment.

What type of ants were they? I’m wondering if this would work on a larger scale. Ants love the sandy soil in my yard and it pains me to dump poison granules all over the place. I’m not looking to kill them, I just want them to find somewhere else to go. Maybe mixing a big batch in a sprayer for use around the house perimeter would help (though spreading peppercorns all over the yard would be pretty neat). :) Regardless, I’m going to check this out for home use. Great tip!

These were your standard tiny black ants. There are also a few other natural substances that are effective also. I’ll write a longer post about it next week.

I imagine you could infuse the peppercorns and do the same thing; Yes you could put it in a big sprayer. I posted a recipe that I used on Vegan Momma I’ll hunt it down rewrite it and post it here. Neem oil is also good. It smells like garlic another natural repellent. I use that in my garden.

Wow, didn’t realize that ants would be repelled by a simple remedy such as this. I guess it makes sense though, because many plants create the spicy flavor to prevent from being eaten and animals dislike it. I have heard that planting cayenne peppers in your vegetable garden will keep out the rabbits (if they take a bite).

    perros,
Exactly! I use them in my garden also. At time simple is better and it’s also a healthier option.

Very cool blog! In India, we are used to natural healing techniques, so I know these things work.

    Shantanu,
I know a friend is from madras India they visit ever other year. Another friend is from Bombay they go home often. I find in many parts of the world they are more open to natural remedies and in the States we are resistant. It’s amazing to me since formerly we did use natural remedies. I’m hoping, in time, people become more accepting.

Thanks for stopping by. I really love your website I’ll be visiting.

I know if I was a ant, I would get run away from black pepper. Have you ever got a little in your eye. That stuff burns.

Ants are really so disgusting. I don’t prefer to use chemical for controlling ants.
