Natural Bug Spray: Insect Repellent
July 24, 2007

Peppermint Blast
- 32 ounces of water
- 8 drops of peppermint essential oil
- 8 drops of lemon essential oil
- 4 drops of tea tree essential oil
Directions
- Add water to a spray bottle
- Add all the essential oils
- Shake well before each use
I’ve used this spray along with variations for years it’s a simple but non toxic way to keep your little visitors at bay. I spray it on my kitchen countertops, bathroom, carpets, anyplace where I want to deter insects or aid a “crisp” smell to the air.
I was cleaning my dishes yesterday I noticed that I had a few visitors patrolling the countertop (ants) I quickly made the remedy above to keep my little buddies at bay. Peppermint oil is a natural repellent, and most bugs don’t like the stuff.
Air Freshener
It also keeps the air smelling “fresh”. It’s a much healthier choice than many of the chemical laden sprays that you find on the market. I have six pets, two dogs, and four ferrets, people are constantly surprised that my house doesn’t smell like animals.

Hi Opal,
I visit each of your websites daily. I haven’t yet started a bolg but I am thinking about it.
Is this bug repellent also for roaches and safe for my 13 month old? I live in apartments and no matter how clean I keep my kitchen I see them looking for stuff. Thanks for your insight!
TTLove,
Thanks for stopping by! I’ve used the above spray on my countertops since my daughter was born. Although I haven’t had any problems using them around my daughter to be safe I would probably try spraying an area and see if your daughter has a reaction. I did this with my daughter without any problems. It won’t kill the little critters they just don’t like the smell.
I’ve often wondered if the peppermint oil and lemon especially did something to them. I need to read more about this. I use something similar in my garden and the worms/bugs will not go anywhere near the plants that I spray.
When I lived downtown I had a roach problem in my first apartment they would scour the place looking for something to eat a then they would go on to another apartment. I used freshly squeezed lemon juice on the countertops they didn’t seem to like that too much either.
Please let me know if you create a blog I would love to visit.
This is wonderful! I’m going to try this!
I was also going to tell you that with the Spearmint I have growing in my yard - actually a HUGE patch of it…I mean HUGE - and I was going to cut some and boil it in water for an air freshener - what do you think???
Harmonia,
Yes you could do this I would suggest putting the “tincture” in with a carrier, such as vodka. It will last longer and it won’t get moldy. I’ll post a recipe by Friday, ok?
I’ll need to give this recipe to my mum, she’s been getting bitten a lot by miges and ants in the garden. I think that’s why she’s not been doing much work in it!
April,
If she is going to place it on the skin I would use citronella and lemon since peppermint can cause skin irritation for some people. I’ll post a recipe by Monday.
I’ll be having family in town this weekend so I don’t know if I will be on the computer.
I LOVE IT> I am going to try this todaY!
Thanks!
Opal
Where do you purchase your essential oils?
Hi Sabine,
I use From Nature With Love I’m an affiliate there.
I also use Essential Oils University both are excellent companies. The quality of their essential oils is impressive and they ship quickly. Essential Oils University is cheaper however you have to buy in bulk.
FNWL provides oils, butters, and carrier oils. I’ll be posting recipes for homemade lotions/body butters over the next few days. I create and sell natural skin & beauty products I enjoy sharing recipes that I create with others. Eventually I’ll be directly selling essential oils on Healing Yourself Naturally.
Thanks so much for stopping by my websites it’s always nice to meet other bloggers.
Amy made me some bug spray but it has a huge amount of olive oil which I think, but have no evidence, will cause sun burn.
I like the smell of yours; I e-mailed this to her to ask her to make me some.
But geez I should do it myself.
meeyauw,
Do you use that on your skin? Olive oil is a heavy oil and most don’t use it on their skin. Sweet almond oil, grapeseed oil, or even jojoba oil would be great choices.
Yes it’s very easy to make yourself.
