Natural Ways To Prevent Constipation
June 26, 2007
Do you know what I dislike? Not having regular bowel movements. There I said it. I’m not ashamed.
It’s amazing how to many talking about elimination is embarrassing you don’t find too many people talking about it openly ideally we should be eliminating shortly after every meal, but many of us aren’t.
We really should start paying attention to our bowel health since ignoring it can lead to a whole host of problems. Are you curious why you’re constipated? In the first part of this series, we’ll look at what we eat.

1. Poor Eating Habits
Many of the westernized diets are high in animal content, processed foods, and sugars and it’s extremely low in fiber (vegetables, fruits, and whole grains.) This can lead to constipation.
Natural Remedies are Better Than Laxatives
Did you know that there are numerous foods that help you eliminate? It’s true! There are numerous whole foods that not only taste good that aid in elimination.

1. Potassium
How does it work? It helps stimulate peristaltic action which will make your bowels move. It also helps eliminate the layers of mucous and hard fecal matter that is clinging to your colon walls.
Potassium Sources
I think most people know that bananas are an excellent source of potassium but did you know that tomatoes, broccoli, cucumbers, kale, sesame seeds, wheat germ, brewers yeast, pineapple, and cauliflower are all excellent sources? It’s true.

2. Flax Seeds
Did you know that the seeds and oil from flax contain nutrients that promote excellent health? I grind my seeds because the whole seeds simply pass through your system. I add about one to two tablespoons daily in my fruit smoothies, salads, or dips. You must drink a lot of water in order for this to be effective.
The flax seeds turn into a gel after being exposed to water. Flax seeds work best for mild to moderate symptoms of constipation.
Oh by the way flax seeds also makes a great hair gel.
3. Apple & Pear Juice Smoothie
I chop up two apples and two pears. I combine with water or apple juice (about 2-3 cups) I blend, serve, and enjoy. Pears have are loaded with vitamins and minerals that help effective in cleansing out your colon. I’ve found this to be most effective to drink when I wake up in the morning and right before I go to bed.

4. Senna
This is powerful! I’ve used it when I’ve had chronic constipation it moves things through the bowels very quickly! Why is it so effective? Senna contains a chemical called anthraquinone. Anthraquinone provides a strong action on your colon walls. You shouldn’t use this for over a week. I haven’t had to use it often.

Prevention is Best
You can save a lot of discomfort by preventing constipation in the first place diet, exercise, and taking time to relax is a few ways to avoid constipation. Eating a high amount of fresh vegetables and fruit and drinking my smoothies is great ways for me to keep constipation at bay.
