There And Back Again: Eliminating the Common Cold Naturally

October 1, 2007

If you are a Lord Of The Rings fan, like myself, perhaps you know where I chose part of this title? There And Back Again was a book written within a book you will see it mentioned in Lord Of The Rings and The Hobbit. I’ve read both books several times.

Why did I choose that title? This next series is completely unexpected you see it involves my four year old daughter getting sick with her first cold. I will start the series at my main website Vegan Momma I’ll move it on to The Raw & The Cooked it will come back to Healing Yourself Naturally.

If you’ve read Healing Yourself Naturally for any length of time you will know that I’m passionate about healing myself, and my family, through natural means. I don’t believe that all allopathic medicine is bad, but I do think many of us reach for it too quickly when we could be reaching for fruits and vegetables, herbs, essential oils, etc. that we might already have in our home or we can pick up at our local grocery or health food store. If essential oils aren’t available near you. You can purchase many online. I highly recommend From Nature With Love. I have been purchasing items from them for over five year. The quality of their ingredients is exceptional and they have excellent customer service, along with speedy delivery.

Woman with a cold

The “Gift” That Keeps On Giving

Guess what? I received my daughter’s cold also. Or I guess I should say I received the symptoms of the cold. I have not had a cold in several years. Did I “catch” her cold? No, if my body was running at peak performance it wouldn’t!

Scott Ohlgren of How Health Works has talked about it in the audio cd, Real Food Real Health and his book Cellular Cleansing Made Easy . I had both but recently I gave the audio cd’s to a blogging pal.

I purchased the collection about four years ago. I was really impressed with what he had to say since it’s things I’ve been talking about for years. I even participated in the 28 Day Food Cleanse. Although I was doing the majority of the things, he mentioned already this was the first time that I went 28 Days eating all raw foods.

You didn’t have to eat all raw to do the cleanse but since I was already eating whole foods anyway I thought I would kick it up a notch. It’s always nice connecting with individuals that have the same passion as I do about health.

Anyway back to my story… I’ve been around sick people for years without catching anything. This past week was different you see my body couldn’t fight off the infection when it came knocking so guess what happened? I had the symptoms of the cold yesterday. It didn’t stay long in our systems.

On The Road To Recovery

My daughter and I are fine today although remnants of the virus most likely is still in our system outwardly we are feeling great! My daughter was almost back to her normal self yesterday.

Natural Remedies Used In Healing

What did I use? Ingredients that I had at home. Carrots, ginger, garlic, kale, rhubarb, and beets played an important role in healing ourselves naturally. I also used lavender essential oil, tea tree essential oil, myrrh essential oil, and peppermint essential oil.

Green Star Juicer

We spent most of the day resting and we healed ourselves naturally by consuming freshly juiced vegetables and fruits. When juicing you consume a lot more vegetable and fruits than most people are comfortable eating, you are receiving a megadose of nutrients in a highly concentrated form - juice.

How did I do this? I pulled out my Green Star Juicer . I’ve purchased a few juicers over the years and by far this has been the best one I’ve used. It blasts through anything I toss at it. Beets, carrots, jicama, radish, etc. They are no match for my Green Star Juicer.

There has been numerous research articles, books, case studies, etc. that have been written on the benefits of juicing. I know my eye sight has improved because of it. At my last appointment my optometrist commented how healthy my eyes were at my last appointment and guess what they had improved!

We juiced, ate raw garlic (My daughter consumed raw garlic in her juice), our congestion broke and now I feel like I’m back to normal but guess what? I’m still taking a break today. If I had reached for allopathic medicine as I used to several years ago. I would still be feeling miserable today and I would be having not so pleasant side effects. Another reason I bounced back so quickly was because of the types of food I eat on a regular basis.

…And Back Again

When we come back to Healing Yourself Naturally I’ll talk in detail about natural remedies for the common cold in detail. One tidbit I’ll toss out now…Did you know that red beet juice makes the flu virus inactive? ;-) I’ll also write about why natural remedies are an extremely effective way to eliminate the common cold and you might find a few “natural cold formula recipes” also. I’ll also talk about the power of visualization and why if you aren’t already you should incorporate this into your lifestyle.

Encyclopedia of Natural Healing

One book that I’ve been recommending to people since 2002 is The Encyclopedia of Natural Healing. I bought this book a few months after it came out because of the wealth of information it included. Many remedies I had already known about and I thought it was wonderful to have all that information in one book.

This book is over 1,000 pages and it is a pricey book costing about $75 but as I tell people what price do you put on your health? How much have you spent in allopathic medicine? You can find cheaper solutions within these pages, and hopefully it will save you from becoming sick again and if you do become ill your recovery time might be a lot quicker.

The Encyclopedia of Natural Healing is put out by the Alive Research Group publication which is based in Canada. I was so impressed with this encyclopedia that I ordered their magazine. I remember I had to go through a few extra steps to accomplish this since they were based in Canada but guess what? It was worth it. The articles in the magazine are spot on, and I find myself nodding in agreement often with what they have written. :-)

It’s good to be back to normal and although I know that I could do anything that I set my mind to. I’m taking it easy and spending most of the time with my daughter.

    Hi Opal,

You’re so right about juicing and how it can greatly affect your health. I recently did an experiment on myself (documented on my blog) in which I mono dieted for 3 days (to prevent breast cancer, not a weight loss type of diet) and had only fresh fruit juice for one day, then ate fresh fruit and veggies as well as the fresh fruit juice for 2 more days.

Could I eat or juice raw garlic, though? Wow, don’t know about that, kudos to you and your daughter for doing that! :)

    Hi JoLynn,
I’ll have to check out your documentation. Usually once a week I do a juice or smoothie fast. The only thing I’m fasting from is solids since my nutritional needs are met through the juices or smoothies I consume. :-) It’s a great chance for my digestive system to have a much needed break.

You might be surprised with the garlic all the added vegetables and some fruit masked the garlic taste so even my daughter drank it. She will not eat garlic raw I have no problem with eating it that way but she readily accepted it through juicing. ;-)

I have a horrible cold…I told my husband that I was gonna come here and see what you recommend! I had never known that about juicing but it makes complete sense. Unfortunately I don’t have a juicer so maybe I should put that on my Christmas wish list. As always, I enjoy reading your blogs…must go rest now. thanks for all the info…

When my wife and I got married , one of the cooler gifts we received was a good juicer . We opened it up with everything else, found a place on the shelf for it and there it sat for two years.
Two years later I came up seriously ill. I tried all the meds The doctors prescribed and the doctor finally told me there was no cure.(I was in stage 3 of a 4 stage virus caused liver destruction).
We had recently started using the juicer and were able to obtain fresh milk thistle and ran it through the juicer with beet juice (which seemed to tame the taste) and both I and the doctors have noticed improvement . they say I’m on the road back and wanted to know what I did. I was happy to share it then and I’m happy to share it now!
(note: if you have to get dried whole milk thistle, soak It overnight in beet juice for best results) James

    Opal :

I’m impressed how you and your daughter got well in a short time. I’m a fan of natural remedies. I also have a great book in my shelf called “Prescription for Natural Healing”. It pays to read it. Thanks for the wonderful info.

    James:

Thanks for the note. I’m also taking milk thistle capsule from GNC. Got to try your suggestion.

Got something to say?
